Mosel-Camino in Pictures: From Koblenz to Beilstein

Michael Jakusch walked the Mosel-Camino from Koblenz to Trier and brought back this photo story from it in July 2012. It leads from Koblenz via Alken, Burg Eltz and Treis-Karden to Beilstein.

All the pictures are in Michael’s Facebook album Koblenz–Trier.

From Koblenz up to the Hunsrück heights

Start of the way in Koblenz

Stolzenfels Castle in Koblenz

The first three kilometres walked

The foundations of the Temple of Mercury

Slowly leaving the Rhine side for the Hunsrückhöhenstraße

Bruder Tönnes Hügel near Waldesch – a princely tomb from 1000 to 500 BC

Alken and the first Moselle crossing

Thurant Castle near Alken

Bleidenberg pilgrimage church near Alken

First stage destination in sight: Alken, Moselle town, 652 inhabitants – Café Becker is a recommended place to stay

Cemetery by St. Michael’s Church in Alken

Ossuary in St. Michael’s Church, Alken. When space in the cemetery ran short in the Middle Ages, the skeletons were stored in this room.

Near Alken I got to cross the Moselle for the first time

… an’ up it goes steep again …

View over the Moselle plain. In good weather, hang-gliders take off from here to fly to the other side of the Moselle.

Burg Eltz and Treis-Karden

Burg Eltz, unfortunately under restoration at the moment.

Burg Eltz used to be pictured on the 500 Deutschmark note

After wandering around for quite a while, finally found a signpost again

View of Treis-Karden. Karden is on the right; Treis lies across the Moselle on the left.

Maria Engelport Monastery and Beilstein

The wall decoration in my room at Maria Engelport Monastery. The convent now serves as a retreat house. It is a very quiet and contemplative place, where the nuns stroll softly through the building to pray or go about their daily work.

On the road again … towards Beilstein

Carmelite church in Beilstein

View of Beilstein. The little village belongs to the district of Cochem-Zell and has 147 (!!) inhabitants.
