A hospitalero (feminine: hospitalera) is the volunteer host in a pilgrim albergue. They welcome pilgrims, stamp the credential, assign beds, keep the house in order, often cook a communal dinner – and above all lend a listening ear. The word comes from the Latin “hospes”, meaning both guest and host.
The role is rooted in the centuries-old hospitality of the Camino. To this day the tradition is carried largely by volunteers – above all in parish and donativo albergues, where you stay for a donation rather than a fixed price. The classic “hospitalero voluntario” works unpaid, usually about two weeks at a stretch, and embodies the “acogida” – the warm welcome.
The romantic image: wine, guitar and deep conversations in the evening. The reality is both warmer and harder. A typical day starts between 6 and 7 a.m. and ends around 10 p.m. In between: breakfast for those setting off, cleaning the kitchen, bathrooms and dormitories, shopping and restocking, laundry, welcoming and registering new pilgrims, giving the stamp, listening and sometimes advising, often cooking a communal dinner, occasionally leading a sharing or blessing circle – and closing the albergue for the night.
A former pilgrim puts it bluntly: this is not a holiday job you do for fun – it is hard graft. Long days, physically and emotionally demanding, simple lodging, little privacy. You give a lot. And that is exactly why most describe it as one of the richest experiences of their Camino life – many say the hospitalero stint is a Camino of its own.
Most hospitaleros were pilgrims themselves. They received hospitality along the way and want to pass it on – to those who now arrive with sore feet and an open heart.
Few places bring you face to face with so many people from around the world as behind the desk of an albergue. Shared evenings turn into friendships – with pilgrims and fellow volunteers alike.
Two weeks in the service of others change your perspective. Many experience the stint as a continuation of their own path – only this time by staying put rather than walking on.

Without your own Camino experience it is hard – and that experience is the best teacher. You will know first-hand what a pilgrim really needs at the end of the day.
Decide who to volunteer through: a national St. James society in your country, the Spanish volunteer federation, or a single albergue directly (see the link list below).
Almost all reputable bodies require a course. It prepares you for reception, hygiene, first aid, conflict and the daily life of a hostel – and is often the ticket to being placed.
After the course you sign up for a specific period and albergue. If you have taken the internationally recognized course, you can apply to the Spanish federation for one of its donativo albergues.
A stint usually lasts two weeks. Many stay connected to the community afterwards, serve again and attend the associations' reunions.
The heart of it is the Spanish programme Hospitaleros Voluntarios (HosVol), the training and placement arm of the Federación Española. HosVol runs numerous donativo albergues and trains to a single curriculum that many national associations worldwide adopt. To serve in a HosVol albergue you must complete the HosVol course.
Courses usually last a weekend (Friday evening to Sunday midday) and run between February and June; the year's calendar is published each January. They cover the philosophy of “acogida”, running a hostel, hygiene, first aid, conflict resolution and handling difficult situations. Placements are spread over about 16 two-week periods from March to October.
Many countries offer the course in their own language. In the US, for example, American Pilgrims on the Camino holds several weekend courses a year (recently in Maine, North Carolina, Oregon and California) and even awards a travel grant for the subsequent service. In the German-speaking world the Deutsche St. Jakobus-Gesellschaft trains (traditionally in spring) and hosts an end-of-season exchange. Always check current dates directly on the sites. Most dependent on volunteers are the parish (parroquial) and donativo albergues of the associations – often the most atmospheric places on the whole route. Municipal albergues use a mix of volunteers and paid staff; private albergues mostly employ paid staff but occasionally take volunteers directly. A few well-known volunteer-run examples:
The service is unpaid. As a rule you get a bed and often meals or the communal dinner at the albergue; you usually cover your own travel to and from. Course fees are modest, and some organizations (such as American Pilgrims with the Michael Wyatt grant) help with travel costs. In short: you invest time, not money – and get back an experience that cannot be measured in euros.

It helps a lot, but is not required everywhere. At least one team member should speak the local language well; with English and some basics you will often get far.
