Who is behind the route
The Asociación de Amigos del Camino Mozárabe de Santiago de Badajoz is based in Castuera, in the middle of the treeless expanse of La Serena. It looks after the final stretch of the Camino Mozárabe: from the border with Andalusia to Mérida, where the route joins the Vía de la Plata.
The name of the route recalls the Mozarabs, the Christians in Muslim-ruled al-Andalus who kept their faith and used this link to reach the way to Santiago. The association tells this story on its website and makes it visible to today's pilgrims.
The association's route
- Camino Mozárabe – the section in the province of Badajoz: around 117 km from Monterrubio de la Serena via Castuera, Campanario, Don Benito, Medellín and Torrefresneda to Mérida, in five stages
Up to Monterrubio, the route is looked after by the Córdoba association. In Mérida it continues north on the Vía de la Plata.
What the association does for pilgrims
The association issues its own paper pilgrim credential and offers a pilgrim guide with maps, stages and services. Its accommodation list for the province's hostel network (Red de Acogida) is updated regularly, most recently in May 2026. In 2023 it walked the route again and replaced road sections with safer paths; the map on its website shows the revised sections. GPS tracks and safety advice complete the offer.
