Oederan is the small stage after the great silver town: 15.5 kilometres beyond Freiberg a small town awaits, with an open town church on the Way of St James, a Silbermann organ from 1727 and the Klein-Erzgebirge, the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) at a scale of 1:25. Two pilgrim hostels take you in before you walk the 25.6 kilometres to Chemnitz.
How long to stay?
An afternoon is enough. From Freiberg it's only 15.5 kilometres, so you arrive early and have time for the town church, the market square with the weaving museum and, in season, the Klein-Erzgebirge. You don't need more, and the next morning a longer stage awaits, 25.6 kilometres to Chemnitz. From November to March it's quiet here: the miniature park is closed then, and the church is only open daily until the end of September.
Oederan in Ninja numbers
- 133.9 kilometres since Bautzen according to Camino Ninja, with 174.1 still to go to Hof. With Oederan you haven't yet crossed the midpoint of the way, but you can already smell it.
- 1:25 is the scale at which the Klein-Erzgebirge shows most of its more than 200 models. A whole mountain range that fits into a park.
- 63 metres is the height of the tower of the town church of St. Marien, completed in 1725.
- 1727 is when Gottfried Silbermann built the organ of the town church. In 2027 it will be 300 years old.
Arriving: the short day
Beyond Freiberg the Saxon Way of St James leads via Oberschöna and Kirchbach to Oederan. This stage is shorter than the one before and the one after, and that is exactly its gift: you can spend the morning in Freiberg and still arrive in good time.
In town the way leads through the Unterstadt and the Kirchgasse to the town church on the Altmarkt. A Luther monument stands in front of it. Above the town ran the historic Frankenstraße, the trade route that gives the way its subtitle: Saxon Way of St James on the Frankenstraße.
In brief: a town of cloth-makers
In 1292 Oederan is first mentioned as a town. It grew prosperous on cloth: in 1457 cloth-making became an important trade, and in 1507 linen weaving was added. Today this story is told by the museum DIE WEBEREI on the market square, on historic looms from two centuries.
The town church suffered a fire in 1467. After that, in the late 15th century, the present late Gothic hall church was built, using parts of the earlier building. Its ground plan resembles that of Freiberg Cathedral, which you saw the day before.
Small, but with Silbermann: what to see
Oederan is a town for a walk without your rucksack. Everything important lies close together.
- Stadtkirche St. Marien: The late Gothic hall church with three aisles and a flat coffered ceiling is the open church on the Way of St James, open daily from Easter to the end of September, 10–5 (as of November 2026). Inside stands the Silbermann organ of 1727, now with 25 stops on two manuals and pedal, in a neo-Gothic case of 1890/92. From June to September it plays on Thursdays from 12 to 12:30. For a pilgrim coming from Freiberg, this is the fifth Silbermann organ in two days. Have a look at the Romanesque porphyry font too, probably from the 13th century and so older than the church it stands in.
- DIE WEBEREI, Museum Oederan: At Markt 6 historic looms from two centuries are in operation, there are demonstrations, and also the town's history and book printing. The Stadtinformation is in the same building. We didn't find reliable opening hours; telephone 037292 27128.
- Klein-Erzgebirge: The miniature park on Richard-Wagner-Straße shows more than 200 wooden models, many at a scale of 1:25, plus over 1,300 hand-carved figures, some of them movable. It was founded in Freiberg in 1933 and moved to Oederan in 1952. It's open from April to October daily 10–6 (as of November 2026).
Honestly
- In winter half of it is missing. The Klein-Erzgebirge only reopens in spring (in 2026 the season started on 28 March), and the church is only open daily from Easter to the end of September. If you arrive in November, you mostly see the town from the outside.
- The organ rarely plays. Only on Thursdays at midday from June to September. If that doesn't suit, ask at the Stadtinformation whether there are concerts.
- The station is up the hill. It lies south of and above the town. If you arrive or break off by train, you have a short climb.
- There isn't much more. Oederan is a small town. If you're looking for a rest day, you're better off taking it in Freiberg or Chemnitz.
Where pilgrims sleep
There are two private pilgrim hostels in Oederan: the Pilgerherberge Familie Veit and the Pilgerherberge Angerbett. Both are run by private individuals, so get in touch beforehand. There are also holiday flats.
Ninja tips
- Thursday is organ day. From June to September at 12 noon, half an hour of Silbermann. If you set off early in Freiberg, you'll just make it.
- Do the Silbermann double. Wednesday at 12 the Petri organ in Freiberg, Thursday at 12 the Stadtkirche Oederan: from June to September that gets you two Silbermann organs on two consecutive days.
- The Stadtinformation in the weaving museum at Markt 6 is the first address for questions about the church, concerts and the way.
- Look back and ahead at the edge of town. Just beyond Oederan the view opens up into the Flöha valley and across to Schloss Augustusburg.
- Hetzdorf viaduct: On the way towards Flöha, according to a route description from 2016, you see the old and the new Hetzdorf viaduct. The old one, built from 1866, is 328 metres long and 43 metres high; since 1986 trains have crossed on two new concrete bridges, and a hiking trail now runs over the old one.
Practical tips for pilgrims
- Stadtinformation: Markt 6, telephone 037292 27118.
- Train: Oederan is on the Sachsen-Franken-Magistrale, with the RE 3 every two hours and the RB 30 hourly. Handy if you want to skip a stage or go back.
- Church: open church on the Way of St James from Easter to the end of September, daily 10–5 (as of November 2026).
Onward: through the Flöha valley to Chemnitz
From Oederan the way goes via Falkenau to Flöha, where the Flöha flows into the Zschopau, and on via Plaue and Euba to Chemnitz. It's 6 kilometres to Falkenau, 9.1 to Flöha, 25.6 to Chemnitz. It goes down into the Flöha valley and up again in Flöha, and at the end the first city since Dresden awaits.
What awaits you tomorrow
Chemnitz, with 25.6 kilometres the longer stage. After two days of silver and organs you arrive in a city that was European Capital of Culture in 2025. The Pilger- und Jugendhaus St. Antonius and the Jugendherberge "eins" are waiting for you there.
Deep dive: The world at a scale of 1:25
A short read, in case you want to learn more about Oederan. About 3 minutes' reading.
A town made of cloth
When you stand on the market square in Oederan, you stand in a town where for centuries the thread counted. In 1292 Oederan is first named as a town. By 1457 cloth-making had become an important trade, and in 1507 linen weaving was added. In the museum on the market square you can see on looms from two centuries how yarn became cloth.
A church after the fire
The town church of St. Marien has carried its name for a long time. The patronage of the Mother of God is first mentioned in 1375. In 1467 a fire damaged the earlier church, and in the late fifteenth century the building you see today arose, using parts of the old walls. In 1709 the church was renovated, in 1725 the tower was completed, sixty-three metres high. Between 1890 and 1892 it received a neo-Gothic dress inside and out.
The oldest thing in the church isn't a part of the building but a porphyry font, Romanesque, probably from the thirteenth century. A second, Baroque font of 1721 is a gift from Friedrich von Schönberg.
Silbermann in a small town
In 1727 Gottfried Silbermann built an organ with twenty-four stops for Oederan. Later it was altered several times and brought back, most recently restored by the organ-building firm Eule of Bautzen in 1992 and 1993. Today it has twenty-five stops. That a town of this size has an organ by the same master as Freiberg Cathedral is one of the small wonders of this way. In 2027 it will be three hundred years old.
An Erzgebirge you can take in at a glance
In 1933 a miniature park, the Klein-Erzgebirge, was founded in Freiberg. In 1952 it moved to Oederan, and here it stands to this day. So the silver town gave its little mountain range to its neighbour. More than two hundred models stand there, most at a scale of one to twenty-five, populated by over thirteen hundred hand-carved figures, some of which move.
What Oederan gives you
Oederan is a small stage between two big towns, and perhaps that is its point. After the riches of Freiberg and before the city of Chemnitz, this town gives you a short day, an open church and a view of a mountain range so small that you can take it in all at once. Sometimes the way needs exactly such a place.
