Who is behind the route

The Asociación de Amigos del Camino de Santiago de Sevilla – Vía de la Plata was founded on 24 December 1992 and is based in Calle Castilla in the Triana district. The Xunta de Galicia lists it as number 4 in its register of bodies promoting the Camino de Santiago, which makes it one of the earliest.

From the start, it set out to make the historic Vía de la Plata walkable again as a pilgrimage route and to research the traces of the apostle in Seville and Andalusia. In 2009 it received the Premio Elías Valiña for this work, named after the priest who invented the yellow arrows. It was a founding member and the first chair of the Federación Andaluza of Camino associations and belongs to the Spanish federation.

The association's route

  • Vía de la Plata – the whole route: 701.2 km from Seville via Mérida, Cáceres, Salamanca and Zamora to Astorga on the Camino Francés, in 30 stages; the association's work focuses on the start in Seville

In Seville the Vía Augusta arrives from Cádiz; along the way the Camino del Sur joins in Zafra and the Camino Mozárabe in Mérida. From Granja de Moreruela you can walk straight to Santiago on the Camino Sanabrés.

What the association does for pilgrims

The association issues the pilgrim credential, answers planning questions and offers its own route guide and answers to frequently asked questions. Through "SOS Camino" it helps pilgrims who run into trouble along the way. For members and anyone interested, it organises joint stages and outings on the route, publishes a newsletter and runs competitions.
