  • Oederan

Oederan is the small stage after the great silver town: 15.5 kilometres beyond Freiberg a small town awaits, with an open town church on the Way of St James, a Silbermann organ from 1727 and the Klein-Erzgebirge, the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) at a scale of 1:25. Two pilgrim hostels take you in before you walk the 25.6 kilometres to Chemnitz.

  • Oelsnitz

Oelsnitz im Vogtland is the town beneath the towers of St James: the town church of St. Jakobi rises 73.5 metres and holds the largest organ in the Vogtland. After the fire of 1859 the town was rebuilt on a grid, and Schloss Voigtsberg adds to it. An afternoon is enough, because tomorrow 35.6 kilometres to Hof await.

  • Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge

Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge is a town built on coal and therefore sunk a little into the ground: from 1844 to 1971 miners brought hard coal up from the depths here. The KohleWelt in the old shaft tells the story. For pilgrims Oelsnitz is a short stop, 8.2 km after Stollberg, with 21 km to go to Zwickau.

  • Stollberg/Erzgebirge

Stollberg is a small town in the foothills of the Erzgebirge with two churches on the Way and a castle where East Germany locked up some 24,000 women. If you come through on foot, you walk past Hoheneck in freedom, now a memorial. It is still 123 kilometres to Hof, and an afternoon is enough.

  • Treuen

Treuen is the town with two lords: since an inheritance dispute in 1592 it has had one manor of the upper part and one of the lower part, and both manor houses still stand. For pilgrims on the Saxon Way of St James, Treuen is an honest stage town at km 245, with a Romanesque tower base and a lookout tower. An afternoon is enough.

  • Zwickau

Zwickau is a crossroads: the Saxon Way of St James and the Via Imperii meet here, and both lead to Hof. You come into the city over a wooden bridge carrying a water pipe from 1535, and walk past the 88-metre-high cathedral and Schumann's birthplace. An afternoon is enough, for car fans half a day more.
