A circular pilgrim route around the Croatian Adriatic island of Krk: about 150 kilometers in seven daily stages from the town of Krk around the island and back to the Church of St. James in Kornić – part of the Camino Croatia.
The Camino Krk is a circular route across the island of Krk in the northern Adriatic – at about 150 kilometers (the database lists 161.3 km), one of the three routes on the Island Route within the Camino Croatia network.
It begins in the island's center, the town of Krk at the cathedral, loops widely through the island villages, along the coast and through the hill country – and ends symbolically at the Parish Church of St. James the Apostle in the village of Kornić. The route is divided into seven daily stages, which you can walk section by section over a weekend or all at once in a week.
The route is cared for by the Confraternity of St. James – Croatia, which ties it into Croatia's larger pilgrim network; according to the Confraternity, Croatian pilgrims have walked to Santiago de Compostela since the year 1203.
The name simply refers to the island of Krk that the route crosses.
Ideal if you want a short, easy-to-plan pilgrim route – a whole island in a week, with sea views, villages, wine, olive groves and many churches. Because it's a loop, you finish close to where you started, which keeps the logistics simple. It also works well for a long weekend on individual stages.
Less suitable if you want the long, continuous distance of a classic Camino or real mountain hiking. In high summer (July/August) Krk is a busy holiday destination – heat and crowds can make the daily stages more demanding.
From the town of Krk in the island's interior, the first stage runs through Vrh and the Šotovento area to Brzac. From there it continues over Glavotok and the Dubašnica area to Malinska, then north over Njivice to Omišalj near the Krk bridge.
The northernmost section heads to Čižići, then via Soline, Dobrinj and Sv. Vid Dobrinjski to the fortified wine town of Vrbnik. Across the Vrbnik Field – a winegrowing area for over a hundred years – you reach Baška in the south, with one of the largest beaches on the Adriatic. The final stage runs via Jurandvor, Batomalj and Punat to the finish in Kornić.
The landscape alternates between coast, island villages and karst hill country.
The route is divided into seven daily stages of roughly 19 to 23 kilometers each:
The route is waymarked with signposts; the source also provides a GPS file (KML) for download, which you can use in an app such as Maps.Me. The terrain is typical of the island – coast, villages and karst hills; reliable elevation figures are not given on this source page and are therefore omitted here.
The Camino Krk has a Croatian pilgrim passport (credential) that, according to the Confraternity, is officially recognized by the Pilgrim Office in Santiago de Compostela. Use it to collect special stamps at the locations marked on the map and at local tourist offices. Pilgrims who have walked all seven daily stages can receive their own Camino Krk Compostela – issued free of charge by participating tourist offices on presentation of the stamped passport.
You can obtain the credential from the Confraternity's online shop and at several tourist offices on the island (for example Krk, Baška, Šilo/Dobrinj) and at Hotel Kanajt in Punat.
Plan ahead: according to the source, accommodation at the end of each daily stage is very limited and should be booked in advance. Many pilgrims base themselves in one fixed place on the island and use local taxi services to reach the stages and return. It's quieter outside the peak season; in July/August Krk is a busy holiday destination.
Bring sun and heat protection and plenty of water. For stamps, maps and the Compostela, the local tourist offices and the pilgrim passport are the key points of contact.
Croatia sits in the mid-price range. Budget roughly €40–70 per day for lodging and food. In high season (July/August) prices on the island are higher; simple lodgings and self-catering lower the cost.
The island of Krk is easily reached year-round and is permanently linked to the mainland by the Krk bridge – so you don't depend on ferry schedules.
