About 52 kilometers from Vidor to Vittorio Veneto along the ridges of the Prosecco Hills – a long-distance hiking trail through the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. Not a Way of St. James, but a wine-and-landscape route in the Veneto.
The Prosecco Hills Trail – in Italian the Cammino delle Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene – is a long-distance hiking trail in the Veneto, north of Treviso. In four stages it follows the narrow hill ridges from Vidor in the west to Vittorio Veneto in the east, staying largely within the core zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Despite the word "cammino" (path, walk), this is not a Way of St. James or a pilgrimage to Santiago. There is a dedicated "Credenziale" with stamp fields, but the trail is designed as a landscape-and-wine route, managed by the body that oversees the World Heritage Site.
Don't expect a flat stroll: across roughly 51 to 52 kilometers it adds up to about 2,300 to 2,700 meters of climb, because the route repeatedly rises and falls over the hill ridges.
Ideal if you want a short, intense multi-day hike through an exceptional cultural landscape: steep-slope vineyards, panoramic ridges, villages, abbeys and a good glass of Prosecco Superiore in the evening. Doable over a long weekend.
Less suitable if you're expecting a classic pilgrim route with a network of hostels and a spiritual tradition – this isn't that. And if you prefer flat, even stages, keep in mind the constant up and down across the hill ridges; some sections are genuinely demanding.
The trail starts at the town hall in Vidor and climbs over wooded hills and vineyards onto the ridges. Via Col San Martino and the Soligo valley it reaches Follina with its Cistercian abbey, continues over Tarzo and ends in Vittorio Veneto.
A distinctive feature is that the route doesn't follow a single ridge but switches across several parallel "hogbacks" – with ever-changing views over the terraced vineyards of the Prosecco region.
Officially the trail is divided into four stages (Vidor → Col San Martino, → Follina, → Tarzo, → Vittorio Veneto); trained hikers can also do it in two to three days.
The technical difficulty is overall medium to low (hiking grade "E" = Escursionistico), but the elevation gain is considerable. For the demanding final stage there is an easier "North Variant" (4B, about 9.1 km, +312 m) that runs via Fratta, Colmaggiore and the southern part of Revine, bypassing the steeper passages. The trail is marked with signposts and yellow-and-red paint; a GPS track is provided free of charge by the managing association.
The Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. The listing recognizes a cultural landscape in which people have, over centuries, turned steep and hard-to-farm slopes into a unique mosaic of terraced vineyards, woods and villages.
This is where Prosecco Superiore DOCG grows. Along the way you can taste the wine, regional specialties and Venetian cooking in the cellars and inns – part of the appeal of this trail lies precisely in this union of landscape and good food.
The best time is spring to autumn; in late summer and fall you'll catch the grape harvest (vendemmia). Bring sturdy hiking shoes and enough water, given the many climbs. You'll overnight in the villages along the way (guesthouses, agriturismi, rooms); book lodging in advance, as there's no dense hostel network like on the great pilgrim routes. Before setting off it's worth downloading the official GPS track. A free "Credenziale" (trail passport) can be requested on the managing association's website.
Italy is about as expensive as central Europe. Budget roughly €50–90 per day for lodging and food; agriturismi and simple guesthouses sit at the lower end, more comfort and wine tastings at the upper.
Vidor itself has no railway station. Getting there and back runs via the Venice – Conegliano – Vittorio Veneto – Belluno rail line and regional buses.
