About 48 kilometers from Vila Nova de Cerveira on the Minho across the border to Vigo – a short, cross-border Portuguese-Galician Camino that joins the Coastal Way to Santiago at Vigo.
The Caminho Português de Nossa Senhora do Norte is a short, cross-border route in northern Portugal and Galicia. It begins in Vila Nova de Cerveira on the Portuguese bank of the Minho, crosses the border river into Spain and runs through southern Galicia to Vigo.
At about 48 kilometers it's a compact route, walkable in two to three days – ideal as a final, connecting stretch before joining the coastal route toward Santiago at Vigo.
Named after the Marian devotion "Nossa Senhora do Norte" in the Portuguese pilgrim tradition.
Ideal if you want a short, cross-border stretch between Portugal and Galicia – as a connecting piece or a quiet lead-in before the coastal route to Santiago. Comfortably done in two to three days.
Less suitable if you expect a long, standalone long-distance route with continuous pilgrim infrastructure: this way is short and more of a link than a destination in itself.
From Vila Nova de Cerveira, a fortified town on the Minho, the route crosses the border river into Galicia and runs through the hilly hinterland of southern Galicia to Vigo on its ría. The landscape shifts from the Minho's floodplain to wooded hills and the wide sea bay before Vigo.
At about 48 kilometers with some 818 meters of climb (highest point about 328 m), the route is short and moderately hilly – comfortably done in two to three daily stages. It also works as an extending feeder to the coastal route.
At Vigo the route meets the Caminho Português da Costa (Coastal Way), which runs over Redondela and Pontevedra to Santiago de Compostela. So this short route extends seamlessly into a full pilgrimage to Santiago.
The best time is spring to autumn. Accommodation is in guesthouses and lodgings in Vila Nova de Cerveira, the border area and Vigo. A pilgrim credential (credencial) is useful for stamps and hostels, especially for the coastal route that follows.
Portugal and Galicia are comparatively inexpensive. Budget roughly €35–55 per day for accommodation and food; simple hostels lower the cost.
The starting point is Vila Nova de Cerveira, the finish is Vigo.
